Series: Star Wars Name: Raynar Thul Age: 28 Gender: Male
well is it them or me
Appearance: Once upon a time Raynar Thul was a handsome, aristocratic young man with blond hair and bright blue eyes. Those eyes are all that remain now. His entire body is covered with horrible burn scars from the Crash. All of his extremities – ears, nose, even the tips of his fingers and toes – have been burned completely away. His face has taken on a twisted, melted appearance and is virtually expressionless because the stiffness of the scars that covers it prevent much movement, even smiles. His right arm has been amputated halfway through the forearm, and the left hand is a twisted claw, the fingers of which have been fused together or burnt away entirely. He is tall and imposing, not just because of his horrific appearance, and tends to dress in the colors of the house of Thul; red, gold and violet. His stare is almost unblinking and is piercingly intense and sharp.
well I just can't see
Personality: Raynar’s personality is difficult to pin down and describe. Before his absorption into the Nest he was a kind and caring individual, perhaps not the most talented or intelligent Jedi but competent and determined. He cared greatly for his friends and those around him and will go to great lengths to save people. He could occasionally be a spoiled brat with a slightly arrogant streak, but he was aware of his shortcomings in this area and did his best to improve himself. All of those traits remained after he became a Joiner but were twisted in some way or other, whether by the influence of so many other minds, the actions of Lomi Plo and the Dark Nest or just his own insanity from the crash. His kindness became an obsession with individual value that led to the dramatic overpopulation of the Killiks. His arrogance and determination became a lust for power, which he believed he could use to help the species that had adopted him. He speaks in the plural as a result of his time within the hive mind, and is struggling to break this habit. He feels great pain and loss over the separation from the Killiks and is still struggling to recover from the trauma of leaving the Nest. After his defection back to the Jedi Order to help defeat Lomi aspects of his old personality began to reassert themselves but he has yet to find a way to balance the boy he was with the man he has become.
but there ain't no peace to be found
Particulars: As a Jedi, Raynar can access the Force with ease, using it for everything from sensing other’s actions to telekinesis or influencing minds. He has become particularly adept at this last talent as the UnuThul but is currently doing all he can to avoid using it. He carries as golden bladed lightsaber, but having recently lost his right hand is currently still learning to use it proficiently with his left. He can be a good negotiator and diplomat when he wants to, and has a sharp mind for business as well.
but if someone really cared
Canon History: The son of Alderaanian merchants Bornan and Aryn Dro Thul, Raynar grew up surrounded by wealth and privilege aboard his family's trading fleet. When his Force sensitivity was discovered as a child he was selected to attend Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy and learn the ways of the Force. This proved to be a bit difficult for a spoiled rich kid who was used to always getting his way. His horrible fashion sense combined with his constant questions and superior attitude somehow failed to help his popularity, and he found himself without any real friends. When the Shadow Academy decided to attack the merchant princeling was humiliated when Zekk dropped him into a muddy river - incidentally saving his life - rather than fight such a pathetic opponent. Humiliated he resolved to focus on his studies and the Force to learn to be the best Jedi he could, instead of simply bragging about his own supposed greatness. No sooner had Raynar adopted this new attitude, however, than he received news that his father had suddenly and mysteriously gone missing. He and his new friends the Solo twins began to investigate and soon uncovered a plot by the anti-human Diversity Alliance to exterminate humans from the galaxy using a plague created by Emperor Palpatine which Raynar’s father had accidentally discovered in an abandoned warehouse. Around this time Raynar met Lusa, a Chironian girl who had worked as a terrorist for the Diversity Alliance before, racked with guilt, finding sanctuary at the Jedi Academy. The two were instantly attracted to each other, and gradually became more than friends as he helped her get over her fear of humans. The young Jedi continued his quest to find Raynar’s father and helping him destroy the Emperor's Plague. They succeeded, but his father died destroying the disease, a tragedy which helped Raynar make his final transition from annoying spoiled rich kid to Jedi in training, just in time for the Yuuzhan Vong to invade. The war was not even half way over before Lusa was killed by a pack of voxyn while visiting her home planet. Raynar was devastated by her death and joined the Jedi strike team on their mission to Myrkr to destroy the voxyn cloning material. He became close with fellow Jedi Eyrl and the two shared a few intimate encounters before she was killed by a voxyn and Raynar himself was severely wounded. His fellow Jedi stowed him on their escape ship to keep him out of the way but the ship was almost immediately hijacked by their two Dark Jedi guides, Lomi Plo and Welk. As the damaged ship disappeared into hyperspace, the other Jedi felt a surge in the Force which they assumed to be Raynar's death. They were wrong about this, however, and when the ship crashed on the Killik world Yoggoy in the Unknown Regions, Raynar finally proved himself as a Jedi by dragging his captors out of the burning wreckage and injuring himself horribly in the process. His dying body was discovered by a group of Killiks, but he used the Force to convince them to heal him instead of devouring him. He was eventually drawn into their hive mind, and as the nest absorbed his respect for individual life, it began to expand and draw others into it. He went on to become UnuThul, the leader of the Colony, and the Killiks expanded dangerously close to Chiss space. Tension broke out between the two species, and ten years after his abduction Raynar used the Force to call his old Jedi friends to his side. Several of them became Joiners, particularly Jaina and Zekk, before Luke Skywalker made the discovery that the Colony was unconsciously being controlled by Lomi Plo's Dark Nest. After being show proof - in the form of Welk's body - Raynar was able to remember saving the Dark Jedi in the traumatic crash. The recollection was short-lived, however, and Raynar's damaged mind soon twisted the facts around once more. A compromise was reached finally, and Raynar agreed to move the Colony away from Chiss space to an uninhabited world Han and Leia Solo had discovered. Peace did not last long, though, and soon a mysterious disease began attacking the Colony. Enraged, Raynar, still controlled by that Dark Nest and Alema Rar, blamed the Jedi, and promptly moved the Killiks back to Chiss space.
well they'd take the time to spare
Crux: The situation might have spun even more out of hand had Lomi not decided to destroy Raynar and take control of the Nest for herself. She and Alema attacked him and he managed to hold them off long enough to reach a ship. Lomi severed his right arm in the process but he still managed to reach Luke Skywalker and inform him of what had happened. The confrontation had finally restored his memories of the Crash and allowed him to realize the extent to which Lomi was controlling him.
a moment to try and understand
Tangent: The Jedi returned to killik space where Raynar used his connection with the Killik hive mind to track down Lomi who Luke confronted and eventually killed. They then returned to the Jedi temple where he attempted to regain his sanity and sense of individuality, with little success. Finally, Luke suggested he travel to a city on a distant world where he might find peace and healing.
another one's despair
Allegiance: Banausos Reason: Raynar grew up aboard his parents’ fleet of merchant star ships, learning the family business from a young age. It was always assumed he would one day take over the operation.
